A Worn-Out Mountainside Deck in Sevierville Gets a Complete Rebuild

After years of East Tennessee weather, the homeowners on Sanders Lane in Sevierville knew their multi-level deck was past the point of simple repairs. There were areas of rot in the wood. The stairs were poorly placed. Getting to the crawlspace and HVAC meant walking through the main living areas of the deck. It was time for changes and upgrades.

After meeting with the deck specialists at Smith Roofing & Exteriors at a recent Dogwood Arts House & Garden Show, they decided to move forward with the project.

A deck system built into a location this high and remote is not a simple job. Safety and longevity were the top priorities. The Smith team brought in structural engineers to make sure the final result would be safe and meet all local building codes in Sevier County. Once the plans were finalized, work began with the careful removal of the old multi-level deck. We carefully dismantled the old structure while managing the integrated electrical wiring and gas lines that ran throughout the old deck.

New heavy-duty footers were poured and set as the starting foundation. From there, the new deck went up layer by layer. The homeowners wanted to keep a traditional wood look, so grade 2 pressure-treated lumber was used throughout the build. For the railing, they went with powder-coated hog wire panels. They are strong, weather resistant, and do not block the beautiful mountain views that make this Smoky Mountains property special.

Visitor flow was a big priority. The old deck had cramped walkways and awkwardly placed stairs. During the rebuild, some areas got wider stairs, and in others, stairs were removed entirely. Gates that lock were installed in select areas to keep pets and children safely managed. Walkways and entrances were reworked. The path to the crawlspace and HVAC is now separate from the main living areas of the deck. The overall result is a more logical, purpose-built layout.

With a project this in-depth, it was a great time to make a few additional upgrades. The owners took the opportunity to opt for oversized gutters and downspouts on the entire roof to manage water more efficiently, and gutter guards were added to keep them clog-free.

Currently, the new deck is waiting for the pressure-treated wood to dry before it receives its waterproofing treatment.
