Storm and Tree Damage Roof Replacement in Powell, TN
Spring and summer storms are a fact of life in East Tennessee. The ones that moved through Powell brought high winds and took down multiple trees, several of which came down on this brick basement ranch in the Norte Villar subdivision. The impacts landed on the back and center of the roof. Some of what they left behind was cosmetic. Some of it was not. The trees punched clean through the roof deck in places, tore part of the roof and gutter off the rear patio, and allowed water into the living room ceiling inside the house.
The homeowner called Smith Roofing & Exteriors, and Jonathan Woods came out for a full assessment. The fallen trees were the obvious problem. The less obvious one was the age of the shingles. They were nearing the end of their life, and that changes the math on a repair. New shingles used for repairs rarely blend well with weathered ones, and any area left alone would have continued aging while the repaired areas stayed new.
So the homeowner made the call to replace the whole roof rather than patch it. All damaged areas were addressed, the color stayed consistent from one end of the house to the other, and the entire system now ages on the same timeline.
Work started on the ground. Tearing off a roof is dirty work, so the crew covered the landscaping and patio before a single shingle came off. From there, it was a full tear-off down to the deck, including the shingles and underlayment. Damaged decking was removed and replaced, and loose sheathing was re-nailed. The larger chimney got a rebuilt cricket and new flashing around it. Ice and water shield went into the valleys and around the chimneys, and then synthetic underlayment went across the field of the roof.
For shingles, the homeowner chose Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration, which carries a limited lifetime warranty. Rather than change the character of the house, they stayed close to the original color and picked Onyx Black. A new, continuous ridge vent capped off the roof, keeping air moving through the attic as it should.
The rear patio needed more than roofing. New vinyl soffit in Sandstone went in under the patio and along the eaves. Damaged fascia was replaced and wrapped in Sandstone aluminum trim. The rear elevation also received a new 6-inch seamless gutter system in Classic Cream, with 3-inch by 4-inch downspouts and LeafBlaster Pro gutter guards to match the ones already on the house. The front gutters were in good shape, so they stayed.
Looking at the home from the backyard, there is no sign that trees ever hit this house.

Project FAQs
Q: What is a chimney cricket, and why do chimneys need a new one?
A: A cricket is the small peaked structure built on the uphill side of a chimney that splits water and sends it around instead of letting it pool against the masonry. The larger chimney on this home had its cricket rebuilt during the tear-off, along with new flashing, since that joint is one of the most common leak points on many roofs.
Q: Why were only the rear gutters replaced?
A: The tree damage was concentrated on the back of the house, where it took out gutter, fascia and soffit along the patio. The front gutters were in serviceable condition, so they were inspected and reused. The new rear run is a 6 inch K-style seamless system in Classic Cream with LeafBlaster Pro gutter guards to match what was already on the home.
Q: Only part of the roof was hit by trees. Why replace all of it?
A: Two reasons. The existing shingles were near the end of their service life, so new shingles set next to weathered ones would not have blended, and the sections left alone would have kept aging while the repairs stayed new. Replacing the whole roof put every plane on the same age, the same color and the same warranty.
