Siding Installation and Deck Upgrade in Tellico Village

Project at a glance:
Smith Roofing & Exteriors completed a combined siding, deck, and gutter project on a Tellico Village home in Loudon County, TN. Old vinyl was replaced with James Hardie HZ10 Cedarmill plank in Svelte Sage, the original deck was rebuilt with 6×6 posts and Deckorators composite decking, and new oversized gutters with guards were installed throughout. Completed April 2026.

Looking to replace old vinyl siding, this Tellico Village homeowner turned to social media for recommendations for a reputable siding contractor. After learning about Smith Roofing & Exteriors, they scheduled a consultation. They realized that tackling multiple projects at once was a smarter, less invasive move, so the project expanded to include replacing the gutters and deck. A plan was hatched, and work began.

Starting with the deck replacement, the old deck was built using flimsy, builder-grade materials like 4×4 posts that were beginning to show their age. The design and size (10’ x 18’) stayed the same but included upgraded materials for longer life and easier maintenance. The 4×4 posts were upgraded to 6×6, and heavier footers were poured for added safety. Before installing the new decking, we added our Dry Below under-deck drainage system. Designed to keep rain from passing through to the space below, the system funnels water away using a concealed gutter system built into the deck floor. The space below is now a waterproof covered area, a smart upgrade.

With water management top of mind, the homeowner also opted for oversized 6” gutters throughout the home, choosing the color Wicker to match the final trim paint. And to add an additional level of protection, the gutters received gutter guards to stop clogs.

To complete the deck, Deckorators composite decking was selected in a complementary Sandbar color. It looks great and will for years, backed by a 25-year stain and fade warranty. For safety, the homeowner chose powder-coated extruded aluminum railing system with vertical balusters. This system is less obtrusive, offering better views than the previous vinyl-covered railings while remaining just as strong and safe.

After the deck was complete, our team moved on to the siding. The existing vinyl was showing its age, with several areas that had been replaced over the years. The homeowner wanted a more substantial upgrade with the flexibility to paint in the future. James Hardie Cedarmill plank siding was the perfect fit. Thicker than vinyl and backed by a 30-year warranty, it offers durability with low maintenance. Installation was straightforward: old siding removed, new underlayment installed, then new siding applied. To finish, the home was painted using Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint in Svelte Sage with Natural Choice accents.

The final result is a beautiful, low-maintenance home that will look great for years to come.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are there two project managers on this project?

While all of our project managers are trained across our services, we assign specialists based on the scope, such as decking or roofing. On larger projects, multiple teams may work at the same time to keep timelines on track.

How did the production team handle the gas and sun shade during demo?

Projects like this often include features that need to be adjusted during construction. The existing natural gas line for the grill was safely capped and relocated during demolition, then reinstalled with the new deck. The sunshade above the deck was temporarily removed during siding work and reinstalled once complete.

Why did this homeowner choose Hardie over the vinyl that was already on the house?

Homeowners often choose James Hardie fiber cement siding because it is thicker, more durable, and more stable than their old vinyl. They also wanted their home to be a specific color. While vinyl can be painted, Hardie is designed to hold paint well, giving more flexibility beyond standard vinyl color options.
