A ProVia Metal Slate Roof Replacement on a Fort Loudoun Lake Home in Knoxville

PROJECT OVERVIEW:
Smith Roofing & Exteriors replaced an aging wood shake roof with ProVia Metal Slate in Coal Stone on this Fort Loudoun Lake home in Knoxville, along with new skylight, chimney flashing, and trim work.

This home’s original wood shake roof had done its job for years, but general wear and rot had caught up with it. Because finding roofers who still specialize in shake repair had gotten harder every year the homeowner decided to give Smith Roofing & Exteriors a call… again. You see, the home had already worked with us on an earlier repair to rotted fascia, subfascia, and rafter tails along the eaves. When it came time to replace the whole roof, the homeowner contacted the team again.

The roofline itself is unique and eye-catching: a series of shed-style planes that meet at sharp angles, valleys, and peaks rather than one simple pitch. Instead of stock trim, the crew worked with custom-fabricated ridge and valley pieces cut to match the home’s specific angles.

For the new roof, the homeowner chose ProVia’s Metal Slate in Coal Stone. It’s a metal panel system designed to mimic the look of natural slate while holding up to Class 4 hail and 180 mph wind. It was the first time a Smith Roofing & Exteriors customer had chosen the Metal Slate style specifically, and it gave the home a more modern, streamlined look while keeping the textured, organic feel of the wood shake it replaced.

The project went beyond the roof itself. The crew installed a new VELUX skylight over a bathroom, and removed two older skylights previously above the home office. The crew ran custom chimney counterflashing around the home’s stone chimney and installed new James Hardie frieze board where needed to properly tie in the sidewall and headwall flashing. Any decking with rot found during tear-off was replaced, and the whole roof deck went under a high-temperature ice and water shield before the new panels went down.

The finished roof carries a 10-year in-house workmanship warranty from Smith Roofing & Exteriors, and ProVia’s own manufacturer coverage: a 40-year paint fade warranty and a lifetime material warranty for the original owner, with 50 years of transferable coverage if the home is sold.

Dedicated Project Manager: Jabrielle Pruitt

“Jabrielle Pruitt and his team did a fantastic job installing our new roof! They were professional, careful (our roof is a bit scary!) and friendly! Cleaned up every evening as best they could even though they were coming back the next day!”

“And our rep Jake Priegel was great to work with…from the estimates to showing us materials at their office and even bringing samples to our home for follow up. We don’t make decisions like this quickly and he was patient and diligent. We would highly recommend Smith Roofing!”

Project FAQs

Q: If a roofer finds additional rotted decking during tear-off, what happens?

A: Most of the time we are able to get an accurate tally of damaged deck boards from our in-attic inspection, but on this home, the damage wasn’t found until after tear-off began. It’s why our written estimates include an allowance of decking sheets for every roof project, plus an additional per-sheet price if more turn out to be needed.

Q: What’s the difference between a workmanship warranty and a material warranty on a new roof?

A: The workmanship warranty covers the installation itself, so problems caused by how the roof was put on fall under Smith Roofing & Exteriors’ own in-house warranty. The material warranty comes from the manufacturer and covers the panels, in this case ProVia’s 40-year paint fade warranty and a lifetime material warranty for the original owner, extending to 50 years of transferable coverage if the home is sold.

The length of both the workmanship and materials warranties varies by project and chosen material.

Q: How do ProVia’s metal roofing styles compare to each other?

A: ProVia’s metal roofing line includes styles built to mimic wood shake, natural slate, and clay barrel tile, so a home can get a traditional look without the upkeep the original material would need. See Smith’s full metal roofing options to compare the styles side by side.
