Roof and Siding Replacement in Cedar Bluff
What started as a simple front porch railing replacement became a total-home makeover for these Cedar Bluff homeowners. After thinking it over, the homeowner decided it was the perfect time to take care of some other nagging issues that had been getting put off. The roof had a few small leaks spotted in the attic and around the dormers, and the shingles clearly looked beyond their life. So they decided to take the plunge and get a new roof. Knowing that while the roof was off it would be the perfect time to make repairs to other areas like the chimney and dormers with new siding, and that new siding there meant the rest of the house would eventually need updating, they opted to go ahead and reside the whole house, fixing any damage they might find.
The Smith Roofing & Exteriors crew started by tearing off the old shingles. All repairs were made to damaged wood including resealing areas around dormers. Valleys received Ice & Water shield, then the whole roof deck got synthetic underlayment. The chimney also had areas that needed attention due to water damage, so the wood was repaired and sealed before the new shingles were installed. The homeowners chose TAMKO Titan XT for its 25-year warranty in the color Rustic Black to contrast the white siding to come. The installation was relatively event-free, taking two days to install. New pipe boots and ridge vents were installed to complete the waterproofing from above.
Next the team moved to the walls. Starting with the siding tear-off, the crews found areas of damage that were addressed. They even found a wall section without insulation, all corrected by the crew. The homeowners decided to go with Mastic vinyl siding with its limited lifetime warranty. It is a little more budget-friendly than cement siding, but more durable than other vinyl siding brands. House wrap was installed for water and air blocking, then siding went on, including the dormers and chimney with its new cap.
The last of the waterproofing was new gutters. Oversized 6-inch gutters in black were hung all around to direct water off the roof and away from the home.
And back to what started it all, the front porch railing. To guarantee that they would never rot out again, the homeowners chose Westbury powder-coated aluminum to replace the flimsy wooden ones. Again, black was chosen to add to the white and black color scheme.
Renewed water resistance. A beautiful new exterior. And a Google review from the homeowner saying they “couldn’t be happier” with the result.

Project FAQs
Q: Why replace the roof and siding at the same time?
A: With the roof off, the dormers, chimney, and walls are easier to access, so combining the work avoids tearing apart finished surfaces twice. Keep in mind that Smith Roofing & Exteriors covers roofing, siding, gutters, chimney repairs, decks, doors and windows, and skylights, so one project manager handles the full sequence rather than coordinating completely different contractors.
Q: What happens if the crew finds damage behind old siding?
A: Hidden damage like this is common on homes in East Tennessee. We anticipate this and include some repair work in all our “basic-better-best” quotes. It is also the reason we do a full tear-off of old materials before re-siding or installing a new roof.
Q: Mastic vinyl or James Hardie fiber cement, which is the better siding choice?
A: We install both. Mastic vinyl costs less upfront and never needs repainting. James Hardie fiber cement costs more but resists fire and tends to last longer. The right choice depends on your budget and priorities. Compare options on our siding services page.
