Roof Damage FAQs
Experiencing roof damage can be stressful. Understanding what to expect can help ease concerns:
- How long does it take for an inspector to come out? After big storms roofing companies will be in high demand. While we will try to be out the same day, if you contact in the middle of the night, it might be the next morning before getting back.
- My roof is leaking right now. What should I do before a roofer arrives? Contain water inside, photograph everything, do not climb on the roof, call for emergency tarping
- Do you work with insurance companies? Yes. We have decades of experience with storm-related insurance claims, and we have former insurance reps on our staff who understand how adjusters evaluate damage. After our free inspection, we can give you a realistic read on whether your policy is likely to cover repair or a full replacement.
- With all the roofing companies contacting me, who should I trust? Reviews are always a good place to start (not to brag but we have over 810 in Google alone!). A trustworthy roofer will conduct a thorough damage assessment, inspecting both the roof and attic. A “fly-buy-night roofer will often just walk around the house and scribble out a generic, unreliable estimate. Lastly, it goes without saying that your contractor must be licensed and insured.
Determine the Extent of the Damage
We start with an extensive roof inspection
When a strong storm blows through, when hail falls, there’s always a chance that it could have done damage to your roof. This puts your home’s value and your family’s safety at risk. We’ll perform a thorough roof inspection so that you are aware of all problems, not just damaged shingles, so you can make informed decisions.

Step by step
Storm damage checklist
Step one
Check your roof (from the ground)
While it may be tempting to get up on your roof, we wouldn’t recommend it. Leave that to professionals.
Simply walk around the perimeter of your house and take note of any visible damage, broken shingles, dented gutters, etc.
Step two
Check your yard and property
If your yard, trees, patio, or deck have damage from a recent storm, there’s a good chance your roof does, too. Do a run-through of your yard to see if there any problem areas.
Step three
Check your attic and ceilings
Look for cracks, leak, or water buildup in your attic or ceiling. Be sure to check every room so you don’t miss any important details.
Step four
Contact us for a free emergency roof inspection
If you notice any issues on these checks, be sure to contact us right away. Any damage done to your roof can grow exponentially if you don’t get it taken care of quickly.
We’ll have a roofer out to you ASAP for your free inspection as well as checking if you require any emergency tarping on your roof. They will also give you an indepth assessment speeding up any roof repairs or help you determine if a new roof is required.
What to look for
How to Spot potential roof damage
Unfortunately, living in Knoxville and East Tennessee means we are susceptible to severe weather events, such as damaging winds and hail. For instance, on August 7, 2023, an EF-2 tornado struck Knox County, causing significant damage to residential properties, including neighborhoods a few hundred yards from the Smith Roofing office.
When such an event happens, you need to assess potential roof problems. Start by walking the perimeter of your home, noting any visible damage in both your yard and the neighbors’. Signs that could indicate possible roof damage include hail dents and shattered glass in vehicles, as well as broken patio furniture. While it might be tempting to climb onto your roof, we don’t recommend it. Leave that to roofing professionals. Next, head inside to inspect your attic and ceilings. Look for cracks, signs of wetness, or water puddles. Be sure to check every room carefully so you don’t miss any signs of damage.
