Hail Damage Roof Replacement in Farragut, TN

PROJECT OVERVIEW:
Smith Roofing replaced a hail-damaged roof in Farragut with Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration shingles in Peppercorn, a Lomanco OmniRidge Pro ridge vent, and Lifetime Tool pipe flashings. Six-inch oversized gutters in Musket Brown were added to handle the home’s roof volume and match existing trim.

On April 10, 2026, an early storm rolled through West Knoxville bringing hail. Sized from 1 to 1.75 inches, it hit The Farm at Willow Creek subdivision and surrounding areas, bringing with it damage to many homes including this one. The roof was getting close to the end of its life anyway, but the hail pushed it over the edge. Minor granule loss turned into major granule loss. Small nail pops turned into locations for leaks. Gutters and downspouts had visible dents. It was time to take care of the damage before greater problems began.

While driving through the neighborhood, a member of the Smith Roofing team noticed the damage and stopped to make the homeowner aware of the issues. After a quick inspection, everyone was on the same page about what was needed next: a new roof. Because this was storm damage, insurance adjusters were called in and the wheels of their process began turning. After a few weeks, they agreed on an amount they were willing to pay. Work could now begin.

Getting to work, the crews started by tearing off the damaged shingles. Once down to the deck, it was obvious that the roof replacement was luckily more on the proactive side rather than reactive to leaks. The only areas that needed serious attention were the bricks on the chimney and a few walls. The owners opted to wait for those repairs as they wanted to bring in their own dedicated stone mason. After the synthetic underlayment and flashing were installed, the shingles came next. The homeowners chose the Owens Corning Duration shingle in Peppercorn for its long life and excellent warranty. The Peppercorn color has a similar look to the old shingles but with a slightly more textured, modern appearance. Topping off everything, the crews installed new ridge vents and pipe flashing for ventilation and worry-free protection.

After the shingles were in place, the gutters came last. With that much roof surface area, the homeowners smartly went with oversized six-inch gutters. They picked a rich Musket Brown color, a perfect match to the paint accents of the entryway columns and window trim.

The final roof and gutters have a cohesive look that fits right in with the organic earth tones of this and other homes in the neighborhood.

Project FAQs

Q: How did Smith Roofing first know this Farragut home needed a new roof?

A: A member of the Smith Roofing team spotted hail damage from the street while driving through the neighborhood after the April storm and stopped to let the homeowner know what he was seeing. A short inspection confirmed major granule loss, nail pops, and dented gutters on a roof that was already near the end of its life.

Q: Why did this project become a full replacement instead of a spot repair?

A: Two reasons. First, the hail damage was spread across the roof rather than isolated to one section. Second, the existing shingles were already near the end of their service life, so any spot repair would have left the rest of the field vulnerable. Smith documented the damage for the insurance adjuster, the carrier agreed on a covered amount, and the homeowner moved to a full replacement.

Q: Why did the homeowners choose oversized six-inch gutters?

A: Two reasons. The home has a large roof surface area, so the volume of water it sheds during a heavy storm is significant. Standard five-inch gutters can overflow under that kind of volume, especially during the intense spring storms East Tennessee sees. Six-inch gutters carry approximately 40% more water than five-inch gutters which reduces the risk of overflow at the eaves and entry areas.
