Do you repair decks, or only build new ones?
We start with an assessment. Once we pull boards and look at the framing, ledger, and footings, we can tell you honestly whether you’re looking at a repair or a rebuild. In our experience across East Tennessee, decks that have reached the point where a homeowner is calling about repairs usually have rot in the framing or undersized structure underneath. A surface-level fix would not be safe or worth your money. If a safe repair makes sense, we’ll handle it. If the structure will not support a repair, we will show you what we found and explain options.
Either way, you’ll get an assessment from an experienced deck carpenter, not a cookie-cutter salesperson.
Deck Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to build a deck?
The time it takes to build a deck depends on various factors such as the size of the deck, materials used, additional features required, any needed permits, even the weather. A simple deck may take a day or two to complete, while a more complex one can take several weeks.
What decking materials do you offer?
We install both wood and composite decking on decks throughout East Tennessee. Pressure-treated wood offers a classic look at a reasonable cost, while composite decking brands like Deckorators and Trex give you long-term weather-resistance and durability with less upkeep.
We also offer a variety of functional and stylish options for deck railings, from traditional wood to sleek, modern aluminum. If you want help comparing materials, our Knoxville-based team will walk you through the options during your consultation.
Can you match my existing deck?
Yes, we often build decks that connect to or extend existing ones. We can match deck boards, railing styles, and stain colors to keep things looking seamless. If you’re adding a roof over the deck, we also match roofing shingle and siding colors so everything blends well with your home. Just let us know what you’re working with, and we’ll take it from there.
Do you offer financing on deck replacements?
Absolutely. As experienced deck builders with financing options, we offer flexible plans, including terms up to 120 months or deferred interest for a year, so you can move forward without delay and within budget.

Wood vs composite decking: which is better for East Tennessee humidity?
For most homeowners in East Tennessee, composite decking is the better long-term choice. Our combination of humidity, summer heat, and regular rainfall is harder on wood than drier climates are. Pressure-treated wood needs sealing or staining roughly every two to three years to hold up against mold, mildew, and rot. Skip the upkeep and the deck deteriorates much faster than it should.
Composite decking from brands like Trex and Deckorators is engineered to resist moisture, mold, fading, and insects. It will not warp, crack, or splinter the way wood does in humid weather, and it does not need to be sealed or stained. Most quality composite lines carry 25 to 50-year warranties.
Where wood still makes sense:
- You prefer the look and feel of real wood and are comfortable with the maintenance schedule
- A tighter upfront budget. Pressure-treated boards cost less per square foot than composite.
- A covered deck, where the boards stay dry. A roof over the deck protects wood far better than full sun and rain exposure.
If you want a deck that looks good with minimal work for the next two decades, go composite. If you love the look of real wood and do not mind the upkeep, pressure-treated or cedar can serve you well, especially under a cover. We install both and walk you through the tradeoffs at your free consultation.
What if I’m not sure if my deck needs repairs?
No problem. Many homeowners aren’t sure if they need minor deck repairs or a full rebuild. Some damage is obvious, like fallen trees, but other issues are harder to spot. We’ll inspect your deck, explain what we find, and give you clear information. No pressure, just honest advice.
Can I extend my home’s roof over my deck?
Yes, we build deck covers everyday. But keep in mind that most deck contractors are not roofers, and most roofers are not deck builders. A covered deck requires both skill sets plus careful flashing where the new roof meets your existing house. The transition between the deck cover and your existing roofline is the most common spot for leaks on a covered deck, and that is the work you want one accountable team handling start to finish.
Smith Roofing & Exteriors is a full-service exteriors general contractor with deck carpenters and roofing crews under the same roof. When we build a covered deck, the same company designs it, frames it, installs the cover, ties it into your existing shingles or metal roof, matches any siding on new posts or knee walls, and handles the gutters that drain the cover. One crew, one schedule, one accountable team across the entire build.
With a deck-only contractor, you typically end up coordinating between two or three companies for a covered build. That means longer timelines, more risk of finger-pointing if a leak shows up later, and a roof-to-deck flashing detail that no one specifically owns.

Keep Your Family Safe
Deck repairs needed? It might be time to rethink.
Deck repair assessments often reveal larger structural issues. Once boards come up, we often find rot or undersized framing that makes a safe repair impossible. Rather than stake our reputation and your safety on temporary fixes, we focus on new builds and full rebuilds. If you are unsure what you need, schedule an assessment. A deck contractor will inspect your deck and explain clear options.
Why now may be the perfect time to go beyond simple repairs:
- Upgrade to new, low maintenance materials.
- Increase the size to a larger, more functional deck.
- Turn the deck into a luxurious living space with a TV, fireplace, outdoor kitchen, and more.
